Love this topic Jess, and so important in today's age where taking accountability is so hard to do. I've had a few situations recently where I burned bridges and I found myself in this exact loop because the situation was irreparable (and it was my fault). But no point in dreading that, better to accept what happened, forgive yourself, and do better for next time!
The part about putting ourselves on trial long after we know what happened is something that I tend to do. Thank you for the tips and reminder that feeling bad longer doesn’t make us more accountable.
The consequences may not always sit well with us, but accepting them is key. Changing your behavior and moving forward is all you can do. What you learn and how you grow from the experience is testament to who you’re becoming.
A question for you:
Is there something you’ve already taken responsibility for—but you’re still punishing yourself over?
Maybe you apologized.
Maybe you repaired what you could.
Maybe you know exactly what you’d do differently now.
Ask yourself:
Is there anything left for me to do, or am I making myself keep paying for what happened?
If there’s something to repair, repair it.
If there’s something to learn, learn it.
But feeling worse for longer doesn’t make you more accountable.
The lesson can stay without the punishment. 💙
