I write NP Fellow Become The CEO of Your Health— a weekly mental health and functional medicine newsletter about building a healthier relationship with your mind, your body, and yourself.
Most conversations about mental health begin with a problem.
Anxiety.
Grief.
Burnout.
Painful experiences we’re still trying to make sense of.
Those conversations matter; however, well-being isn’t built only by reducing what hurts.
Wellbeing also grows when we intentionally strengthen what helps us feel connected, open, and emotionally steady.
This week, we’re exploring goodwill.
Not as a response to suffering and not as forced positivity, but as the simple practice of wishing ourselves and others well.
On Wednesday, we’ll turn that idea into a practical skill through loving-kindness.
For now, we begin with a quieter question:
“What changes when we stop waiting for warmth to appear and start creating more of it on purpose?”

The Quiet Power of Goodwill
It’s easy to think mental health is mostly about fixing what’s wrong.
We work on anxiety.
We process grief.
We learn healthier ways to cope.
Those things matter, but they’re only part of the picture.
Mental health isn’t only about moving away from suffering.
→ It’s also about moving toward well-being.
One way we do that is by intentionally cultivating goodwill.
Goodwill is the quiet wish that we, the people around us, and other people in the universe, may be well.
It doesn’t require affection, it doesn’t mean approving of everything someone does, and it doesn’t ask us to ignore pain, conflict, or harm.
It’s simply an attitude of wishing well and when goodwill is present, it often feels like warmth.
We often assume warmth should happen naturally.
We’ll be more patient once life settles down.
Kinder after we’ve had a break.
More appreciative when we’re less busy.
However, life rarely clears the schedule and announces,
“Now would be a convenient moment to become more generous.”
Goodwill can begin long before the day improves.
It can show up in the way you speak to yourself after making a mistake.
You spill your coffee.
Miss a deadline.
Forget someone’s birthday.
The first voice you hear is your own.
→ Goodwill changes that conversation.
Goodwill can also appear in the quiet decision to assume someone else may be carrying more than you can see.
These moments may seem small; however, repeated emotional habits shape the way we experience our lives.
Positive emotional states do something important.
→ They widen our perspective.
→ Stress narrows it.
When we feel overwhelmed, our attention naturally shrinks toward the immediate problem.
“What went wrong?”
“What needs fixing?”
“What might happen next?”
That response makes sense when danger is real, but it becomes exhausting when our minds never leave that mode.
Goodwill offers a different starting point.
It doesn’t remove the problem and it gives us a little more room around it.
→ From there, we may become more patient, more curious, less reactive, and more able to notice possibilities that fear had pushed out of view.
Goodwill doesn’t make life easier. It changes the emotional posture from which we meet it.
The same is true in our relationships.
Think about someone you almost always feel better after spending time with.
You probably couldn’t repeat what they said last Tuesday, but you remember how it felt to be around them.
You felt welcomed and accepted.
Able to let your guard down.
That feeling usually isn’t created through one grand gesture.
It’s built through small, repeated moments.
A kind tone.
A patient response.
A sincere question.
A face that softens when you walk into the room.
→ This is how emotional climates are created; quietly.
One interaction at a time and each of us contributes to them.
One practice designed to strengthen goodwill is loving-kindness.
Compassion often arises when suffering is already present.
We see pain and something in us wants to respond.
Loving-kindness begins somewhere different.
It doesn’t need a crisis and it begins with a simple wish for well-being.
“May I be safe.”
“May I be healthy.”
“May I experience peace.”
“May you be well.”
The practice is simple, but that doesn’t mean shallow.
Over time, loving-kindness has been associated with greater positive emotion, stronger feelings of connection, and improved emotional well-being.
Not because difficult emotions disappear, but because they are no longer the only emotional state we practice and that matters.
Whatever we practice becomes easier to return to. Including goodwill.
Perhaps that’s the invitation this week.
Not to wait until life feels lighter before allowing yourself to experience warmth, but to recognize that we can help create it.
We can offer appreciation before something is lost.
We can speak kindly to ourselves before self-criticism takes over.
We can extend goodwill before conflict asks us to choose how we want to respond.
We can become more intentional about the emotional atmosphere we bring into our homes, our workplaces, and our relationships.
Well-being is shaped by more than the pain we heal.
It’s also shaped by what we choose to practice each day.
Final Thoughts
We often measure mental health by the absence of struggle.
Less anxiety.
Less sadness.
Less fear.
But well-being can also be measured by what is present.
The quiet appreciation of an ordinary moment.
The sincere hope that someone else is doing well.
The gentler voice we use after making a mistake.
The way another person relaxes because they feel accepted in our presence.
These moments may not look dramatic.
They still shape the emotional climate of our lives.
→ Healing helps us recover from what has hurt.
→ Goodwill helps us grow what we want more of.
We need both.
