How to create enough silence to hear what your mind and body have been trying to tell you.

Why This Skill Matters
How often do you move from one thing to the next without a pause?
An email and a meeting.
Dinner and laundry.
One more notification and one more scroll.
One more episode before bed.
Our days become so full that silence starts to feel unfamiliar.
Not because we dislike it, but because we’re no longer used to hearing ourselves.
This week’s skill isn’t about spending more time alone.
It’s about creating enough silence to notice what has been patiently waiting for your attention.
What This Skill Is
Listening to yourself isn’t about solving your problems.
It’s about becoming curious enough to notice them.
It means creating a few quiet moments without immediately reaching for distraction.
No phone, no podcast, no music, and no need to fill the silence.
Just enough space to notice your thoughts, your emotions, and the quiet signals your body has been offering all along.
You don’t need to change anything.
You simply need to notice.
The Common Mistake
Many of us mistake constant stimulation for rest.
The moment life becomes quiet, we reach for something else.
Music, a podcast, social media, and television.
Not because these things are bad, but because silence often introduces us to thoughts we’d rather avoid.
However, the goal isn’t to eliminate those thoughts. It’s to become willing to hear them.
Why This Works
Quiet or silence gives your mind room to catch up with your life.
Thoughts become clearer.
Emotions become easier to recognize.
Patterns become easier to notice.
Your body also has room to speak.
You may notice tension you’ve been carrying.
Fatigue you’ve been ignoring.
A sense of calm you haven’t felt in weeks.
Silence doesn’t create what’s happening inside you.
Silence or quiet simply gives you the opportunity to hear it.
How To Practice It
Choose ten uninterrupted minutes this week.
→ Leave your phone in another room.
→ Turn off the television.
→ Don’t listen to music or a podcast.
Then...simply sit.
No journaling, no meditation app, and no trying to clear your mind.
Just notice.
Notice your breathing.
Notice your body.
Notice the thoughts that keep returning.
Notice the emotions asking for your attention.
If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back.
There’s nothing to accomplish.
You don’t need to fix anything and you don’t need to make decisions.
Your only job is to listen.
This Week’s Practice
After your ten minutes, ask yourself:
What thought kept returning?
What emotion surprised me?
What did my body notice?
What have I been too busy to acknowledge?
What deserves my attention this week?
What did I learn about myself today?
→ Write down one sentence.
Not a plan and not a solution.
→ Just one honest observation.
Repeat this practice several times this week and notice whether different thoughts or feelings begin to emerge.
Signs It’s Working
You may begin to notice that you:
Recognize your emotions sooner.
Feel less reactive throughout the day.
Become more comfortable with moments of silence.
Respond more intentionally instead of automatically.
Begin trusting yourself a little more.
The goal isn’t to empty your mind. It’s to become more familiar with it.
